Elbin Art currently uses two different Quarter Sawn Oak Lumber to create the Elbin Art Quarter Sawn Oak Collection - Quarter Sawn American White Oak and Quarter Sawn European Spessart Oak. Quarter Sawn lumber gets its name from the way the log is cut and there are many online resources that go into more depth regarding Quarter Sawn lumber. The two main reasons why Elbin uses Quarter Sawn lumber are; 1) Quarter Sawn lumber swell and shrink less than traditional flat sawn lumber 2) Quarter Sawn Oak lumber typically shows off the medullary rays on the wood adding more beauty to the grain pattern. The disadvantage to Quarter Sawn lumber is due to the way the wood is cut results in a higher priced wood than a flat cut piece of lumber. Below explains the two different Quarter Sawn Oak that Elbin Art currently uses for the Quarter Sawn Oak Collection. It is important to note that there is a price difference between the imported Quarter Sawn European Spessart Oak (higher priced) and the Quarter Sawn American White Oak so when purchasing a product that can be made from either Oak, make sure to select the correct Oak preferred in the option menu in the online store.
All Elbin Art Quarter Sawn Oak products are first stained with a Java color stain (unless a separate finish or natural finish is specifically requested by a customer). Staining the Oak with the Java stain gives each piece a nice darker look which also makes the quarter sawn patterns really stand out. After staining, two other finish type of products are applied (separately) allowing for proper curing times between all three products giving the finished pieces a beautiful look.
As with all Elbin Art wood products, Elbin Art tries to use as much of a piece of wood as possible so that there is very little waste. Left over pieces of Oak Wood that may have been used to make a caddy, may then be made into napkin rings, support posts for a caddy, etc. therefore using as much of the Oak wood as possible.
Availability and lead times of The Elbin Art Quarter Sawn Wood Collection products depend on current Elbin Art Quarter Sawn Oak wood inventory. The cost and availability of Quarter Sawn European Spessart Oak Wood makes it very difficult for Elbin Art to stock large quantities of that wood or finished Elbin Art Spessart Wood products. While there may be a minimal amount of Elbin Art finished Quarter Sawn Oak Wood products on hand (depending on product), the majority of products are made to order. The lead time is typically 2-4 weeks, depending on the product. Contact Elbin at Elbin@ElbinArt.com if you have any questions regarding lead-times.
For most Quarter Sawn Oak products, customers can select which type of wood (European Spessart Oak or American White Oak) they would like for the product at checkout. Please note that the product shipped will differ in grain patterns then the sample product photos as each piece's grain patterns will be different. No two grain patterns are alike.
